PURCHASE, N.Y. - Following the conclusion of tomorrow's doubleheader, Purchase College senior and soon-to-be graduate
Dylan Flynn will make Purchase Baseball history by becoming the first player ever to lead the Panthers in hits all four years.
Flynn (Smithtown, NY) has already tallied 32 hits during the 2021 season and currently sits eight ahead of junior
James May (Floral Park, NY). As a result, Dylan will conclude his Panther tenure by leading the squad in hits as a freshman, sophomore, junior and now as a senior too.
It is a remarkable feat, even with the talent the second baseman possesses. Before Flynn, only two players ever led the Panthers in hits on multiple occasions, let alone four-straight times.
The first player to do so was
Austin Groves '11 in 2009 and 2011, as he finished with 53 and 47 hits, respectively. Groves was later inducted into the Purchase College Hall of Fame in 2018 for his outstanding career.
Following Groves,
Michael Sarni '14 also accomplished the feat by leading Purchase in 2012 and 2014 with 38 hits each season. However, outside of those two guys, no other player has lead the Panthers in hits in a season more than twice ... until now that is.
Flynn first burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2018 and immediately flashed his skills. He finished the campaign with 35 starts and recorded 43 hits, a .361 batting average, 26 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. Over his four-year career, the 43 hits remain his highest total for a single season.
After the breakout start, Dylan was named to the All-Skyline Conference First Team and the American Baseball Coaches' Association for his success.
One year later, Flynn picked up right where he left off, tallying a team-high 42 hits, a .359 batting average, 24 runs, 15 RBIs, 21 walks and 21 stolen bases over 34 games played. For the second-straight season, Dylan earned an All-First Team nod from the Skyline for his stellar play.
Then came his junior season in 2020. While we all know how the year went with spring sports eventually being canceled due to COVID-19, that didn't stop Flynn from flashing early on in the year before the abrupt stoppage.
During the 11 games of his junior year, the Smithtown native collected 12 hits, a .324 batting average, six runs and four stolen bases. Following the cancellation of the 2020 season, the Skyline Conference did not issue awards, however, Flynn would have certainly been in the conversation once again.
Finally, we reach the current campaign. At the moment, Flynn sits at the top of nearly every offensive category for Purchase, including hits (32), batting average (.381), runs (27), extra-base hits (eight), walks (16) and on-base percentage (.505). The only category he doesn't lead is RBIs (15), in which he sits second.
In addition to leading the Panthers in hits all-four seasons, Flynn may also lead them in stolen bases each year as well, as he enters tomorrow's doubleheader with one more (15-14) than junior
James Shea (Brooklyn, NY).
With such fantastic numbers across the board, it is certainly easy to imagine Flynn claiming another spot on the Skyline Conference All-First Team to closeout his career. But you will have to come back in a week or so to find out if he was voted in.
Regardless of if he earns the spot or not, the fact remains that Flynn has put together one of the best careers in Purchase College history, regardless of sport. Over the past four years, Flynn has recorded 125 hits, 85 runs, 53 RBIs and 48 stolen bases in 103 games played.
When he graduates next month,
Dylan Flynn will depart the Panthers with one of the best resumes of any player in a long time. He will certainly be missed.
