PURCHASE, N.Y. -
Luke Kubisch '19 was Mr. Consistent for the Purchase College men's volleyball team throughout his career.
In the four seasons he played with the Panthers, Kubisch (Delmar, NY) recorded at least 120 points, 90 kills, 15 aces, 24 digs and 17 blocks each year. Not only was Luke consistent when it came to his numbers on the court, but he was also extremely consistent when it came to just being on the court in general.
In fact, out of the 106 men's volleyball matches Purchase played from 2016-19, Kubisch took to the court in all but one of them. The lone game he missed came back in his freshman year too, meaning he finished off his Panther tenure by playing in 82-straight matches.
With Kubisch and his consistency leading the way, the Panthers enjoyed some of their most successful seasons in program history. During the four-year run, Purchase increased its winning percentage in Skyline Conference games each season and claimed a spot in the Conference's playoffs all four years.
It all started in 2016, as Purchase went 6-10 in Skyline matchups (.375 winning percentage). The following season, the Panthers improved to 4-5 in leagues matches, pushing the winning percentage to .444.
Then things really started to improve in 2018, as the Panthers went 6-4 (.600) and Kubisch enjoyed a breakout campaign. For the year, he led the team in points (213) and kills (182) and was named to the All-Skyline Conference First Team for his efforts.
The final year of the run, 2019, which also happened to be Kubisch's senior campaign, was arguably the best in Purchase history though. While the team only won 13 games in total, it went 7-3 in Skyline games for a .700 winning percentage and claimed the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.
Purchase then defeated St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn in five sets in the Skyline Semifinals, as Kubisch recorded 13 kills, 11 digs and 17.5 points in the victory. With the win, the Panthers advanced to their first-ever Skyline Conference Championship Match.
The Delmar native finished the 2019 season with career-best totals in points (250.5), kills (195), aces (39) and digs (117), before earning a second-straight All-Skyline Conference First Team nomination.
Kubisch graduated in May 2019 as one of the program's all-time leaders in points with 712 and kills with 560. While his numbers were certainly impressive, Luke showed his value was more than just stats throughout his career.
Whether it was his willingness to play any position on the court, his ability to lead the team with his words and play or just the fact that he always showed up ready to go, the impact of
Luke Kubisch on the men's volleyball team will remain for years to come.
