PURCHASE, NY - Going on a winning streak of any kind can be a true challenge.
But establishing one that extends over half a decade? Well, that is downright insane!
And yet, that is exactly what the Purchase College men's swim team achieved from 2010-16 against the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
So for today's entry in the weekly #STATurday series, we are going to dive deep (yes, pun intended) into the lure of this epic run.
The streak began back in November 2010, as the
Panthers edged out a win over their Skyline Conference foe by the score of 101-78.
A year later,
Purchase bested the Dolphins for second time, 99-72. Then in December 2012, the
Panthers again emerged victorious over Mount Saint Vincent, this time by the mark of 96-69.
From there, Purchase collected a fourth-straight win in
2013-14, a fifth in
2014-15 and finally a sixth in
2015-16 to polish off the streak against the Dolphins.
In all six meets, Purchase beat Mount Saint Vincent by at least 20 points and held the Skyline rival below 80 points each time.
What made the streak even more remarkable is the fact that the Panthers and Dolphins only faced-off in head-to-head competition once a year, meaning that numerous student-athletes and recruiting classes were needed to maintain the run for Purchase.
In fact, the winning streak was so remarkable and successful, that it actually still exists to this day ... to an extent at least.
Following the conclusion of 2015-16 season, the Mount Saint Vincent men's swim program ceased any further competition, leaving the streak intact even though the two sides haven't squared off in years now.
However, if the Dolphins ever do return to the pool to face the Panthers once again, the Purchase College men's swim team will have a major legacy and win streak to defend along the way!
